Eli Manning, Bench Him or Trade Him?

So far, this season is tied with the worst start ever for the New York Giants.

With an 0-6 record, is it time to make a quarterback change?

Eli Manning 2013 Quick Stats:
  • Thrown for 1,721 yards
  • 53.7 Completion Percentage
  • 9 TD's
  • 15 INT's
  • 32.07 QBR

Currently, Eli has thrown more interceptions than touchdowns (9) and is number one in the league with 15 interceptions.

Eli also rates 40th in the league with a 64% Passer Rating but has thrown for 1,721 yards, ranking third in the league.

What should be done with Eli, sit him or trade him?

Using a baseball reference - Eli should be pulled like a starting pitcher because he's killing the Giants' momentum. Eli has thrown 8 fourth-quarter interceptions, which is 5 more than any other quarterback in the league.

Eli is simply hurting his team and many want him to sit down, where they think he will be better suited to help his team.

Let's face it, Matt Schaub as well as Carson Palmer are both on the hot seat and could possibly be traded, benched, or unemployed next year...so why not Eli?

The reason why, Eli has helped produce 2 rings in New York, he is considered the leader of the team, and let's face it...who else do the Giants have?

Having a choice in the NFL is a positive; however, as the Giants go, there is no real choice but to play Eli, whose backup is Curtis Painter - Painter also was second-string to big brother Peyton - and even after backing these two quarterbacks up, do you really have the confidence that Painter would excel where Eli hasn't this year?

New York is a huge media hub, which means more than enough reporters and more than enough opinions - some wise and some just senseless.

Eli will finish out the season as the starting QB of the Giants...at least this year.

The 2014 Draft will provide good quarterback options to replace Eli, but for the time being as well as for the next 3-5 years (Eli is 32 years old), I do not see any starting quarterback changes for the New York Football Giants.

Romo Best in the League During the 4th Quarter

Brady, Peyton, Marino, Favre, and Elway are all known for comebacks - Peyton, Marino, Montana, and Brady are known as being clutch during the fourth quarter.

Those that don't follow the sport simply assume, mostly because of ill-informed fans, that Tony Romo fades in the fourth quarter -  that is simply the foolish rhetoric of less-than-educated fans.

Quick Career Stats:

  • Romo has a 68.7 QBR in the 4th
  • Tony Romo has a 104.1 fourth quarter passer rating
  • Romo has thrown for 9.1 yards per attempt during the fourth
  • Romo has completed 64% of his passes during the fourth with 4,075 yards
  • He has also thrown for 31 touchdowns during the fourth
  • He led the Cowboys to a league-high five fourth-quarter comebacks last season

An ongoing joke when a team's QB throws an interception is "He's pulling a Romo", which is simply uneducated banter by intermediate fans who do not understand the game, stats, or simply dislike Romo...and/or possibly the Cowboys

The argument for a QB is that he is only good if he has won a Super Bowl.

This argument always falls short when the likes of Marino or Moon are brought into the conversation - Dan Fouts, Boomer Esiason, Jim Kelly, as well as Fran Tarkenton are also names that can kill this argument.

Stats and facts are the only thing that can win an argument, and unfortunately, most fans are unaware of many of these stats.

New England and the Return of Gronk

Waiting for TE Rob Gronkowski to come back and rescue the Patriots offense?

Gronk is not able to aid QB Tom Brady in throwing more accurately; also, is there really anything he can do to to help the receivers actually catch the ball?

One thing Gronk will be able to do is help prevent some of the embarrassment in the red zone this season, as well as help increase New England's third down stats.

Sunday's game provided 'Old Testament-like' rain during a possible game-winning drive late in the 4th quarter, which ultimately led to an Adam Jones interception against Brady, ending a streak of 52 consecutive games with a touchdown pass.

Quick Stats:

  • According to Pro Football Focus, Brady is rated 22nd in quarterback accuracy
  • According to Pro Football Focus, the Patriots have 17 dropped passes through five games
  • Only the Rams have more dropped passes with 18
  • Denver has 16 passes dropped in five games - with 13 more touchdown passes
  • WR Danny Amendola dropped three balls against the Bengals

Brady has not been as accurate as he has been in the past.

Whether it’s a lack of trust in his receivers or poor route-running by his receivers, the Patriots' receivers don't help the cause much - rookies Aaron Dobson and Kenbrell Thompkins have each botched four passes, only slightly nudging out Amendola and Julian Edelman with three apiece.

Last season stats:

  • NFL’s top-ranked offense
  • 18 drops in seven games
  • Brandon Lloyd after seven games dropped five
  • Wes Welker, after seven games, dropped four, as did Gronkowski

The huge difference between this year and last is that the patriots averaged 31 points a game, which, if the patriots start scoring more, will outshine these dropped passes on offense.

Seattle is Getting Healthy

Considered one of the best teams in the NFL, the Seattle Seahawks begin the week needing to regroup after Sundays' 34-28 loss to the Indianapolis Colts.
Coach Pete Carroll said he expects Pro-Bowl center Max Unger to participate in practice, with a goal that he will be healthy enough to start Sunday against the visiting Tennessee Titans.
Wide receiver Percy Harvin is in Seattle for the first time since having hip surgery in early August. When back in the depth chart, Harvin will add a ton of help on offense:

  • Harvin has returned a kickoff for a touchdown in each of his four seasons in the league
  • Harvin is a weapon than can be used to confuse opposing defenses

Harvin is not able to come off the injured reserve list until Week 7, when Seattle will play against the Arizona Cardinals.

Okung cannot come off injured reserve until Nov. 17, when Seattle will play Minnesota.
The Seahawks were just 2 of 12 on third down Sunday a week after going 3 of 14 against the Houston Texans during Week 4's slim overtime win.
With rookie Michael Bowie at RT and Paul McQuistan at LT, who is playing in place of Pro Bowl LT Russell Okung, Seattle’s offensive line has lacked solidity over the past two weeks.

Jadeveon Clowney May Be Done

Jadeveon Clowney does not want to play college football anymore..
It’s apparent, he has already stated his ribs are too sore to play - Saturday against Kentucky.
Reaction: All the hype has gone to his head, he’s soft, he doesn’t love football, he’s saving himself for the NFL.
Guilty?
Clowney is a third-year junior, he was good enough to be drafted after his sophomore year; however, NFL rules prevented that from happening.
Clowney has accumulated 12 tackles and three sacks this season as teams double-team him and/or run plays to the opposite direction of him - his benefits are becoming overshadowed by his distractions.
“If he doesn’t want to play, he doesn’t have to play,”Coach Spurrier said. “Simple as that.”
The real problem is Clowney’s heart just isn’t in college football anymore.
Another incident this season is when Clowney didn't tell his coaches he couldn't play last week against Kentucky until after the team arrived at the stadium. Since then, there have been questions about whether the potential #1 pick in next year's NFL draft was shutting it down for the season.
Spurrier said Clowney has been receiving treatment twice daily since missing Saturday’s game. Clowney, who didn't practice Monday, has also been hindered by bone spurs in his right foot...as well as a stomach bug this season.

Now finishing the season or getting healthy for the NFL draft is a decision Clowney has to make.

NFL Power Rankings

Are the Raiders good?

Will the Broncos go undefeated?

What's the deal with Jacksonville?

Any given Sunday, there will be a change, a surprise, as well as what everyone expects to happen.

The 2013 NFL season is no different than any other season - games may be analyzed and studied, but let's face it, no one will ever go 100% with their picks for the season.

The bottom of the power rankings is usually easy, it's always the middle that gives analyst issues - the middle of the order, as it is every year, is all smashed together in terms of records as well as with the teams' talent levels...

NFL Nicknames

A nickname is a familiar or humorous name given to a person instead of or as well as their real name.

A nickname is also described as a descriptive name added to or replacing the actual name of a person, place, or thing.

Many of us have nicknames which either describe us or describes how people we know describe us to others.

Positively or negatively, a nickname is usually the honest truth about us.

Rather we like it or not, sometimes a nickname becomes our identity.

In sports a nickname usually lasts longer than the actual name of the player.

Here are some well-known nicknames that may stick with these players for life...

Greatest Name Changes in Sports

If someone said they were going to change their name based off a classic character from a Michael J. Fox movie, I bet your first thought might be Marty McFly, Doc Brown or Biff Tannen.

Cassius Clay - Olympic gold medalist, heavyweight champion, and arguably the best heavyweight ever - announced his conversion to Islam after beating Sonny Liston for the heavyweight title. He was known as Cassius X for a short period of time...
