It was not hard to see this coming; Albert Haynesworth and Mike Shanahan have been going round and round from the beginning. Shanahan, a two-time Super Bowl winning coach with the Denver Broncos and Haynesworth, the highest paid player today could never quite see eye-to-eye.
Haynesworth showed his dislike for his situation by skipping off-season workouts because he did not want to play nose in the 3-4 defense Shanahan’s regime implemented. Shanahan, a hard-nosed coach, told Haynesworth to “Find another team.” Haynesworth, refused, mainly because his contract bonus promised him $21 million dollars April 1st of this year; so, sticking to his guns, Haynesworth remained disgruntled and on the Redskins’ roster.
However, Haynesworth still showed his unhappiness by boycotting a mandatory training/minicamp; this however, did not benefit Haynesworth, he ended up paying a $10,000 fine, ended up as a spectator during many games since he was rarely used.
In addition to not getting his usual playing time, Haynesworth was this year’s NFL ongoing joke because of his conditioning. Haynesworth, the highest paid player in the NFL could not even pass a physical required in order for him to play earlier in the year…Coincidence?
As a fan, I am not sure if being the NFL’s punch line or playing second fiddle during preseason games would be more embarrassing. Understand this, Albert Haynesworth has the capabilities of being mentioned in the same phrase as Reggie White, Mike Strahan, Warren Sapp, and if he applied himself, his name could one day be as glamorous as Deacon Jones or Carl Eller. Simply put, Haynesworth showed his true character this year, and at the same time infuriating his teammates, fans, as well the coaching staff.
Fast forward to week 11, Haynesworth has a terrible practice on Thursday then shows up late for a Friday morning meeting. And after all this, his thinking is that he could be the greatest ever if he was only allowed to play the way he wants to play…Albert, you’ve been entertaining us since the preseason and we appreciate the continued effort you’ve put into our amusement for this year…I salute you.
Haynesworth, now cut without pay for the rest of the season has ample amount of time to work on new material for next year, I simply ask that your next act is an adventure/thriller, as opposed to the comedic show you have given us this year. Not participating because of your dislike for the position you play shows no character, and we as fans should feel as though Albert Haynesworth has stolen something from us.
Lawrence Phillips, Peter Warrick, JaMarcus Russell, and now Albert Haynesworth? Michael Irvin and Charles Haley said it best, "Man up and Play".
