Eli Manning, Bench Him or Trade Him?

So far, this season is tied with the worst start ever for the New York Giants.

With an 0-6 record, is it time to make a quarterback change?

Eli Manning 2013 Quick Stats:
  • Thrown for 1,721 yards
  • 53.7 Completion Percentage
  • 9 TD's
  • 15 INT's
  • 32.07 QBR

Currently, Eli has thrown more interceptions than touchdowns (9) and is number one in the league with 15 interceptions.

Eli also rates 40th in the league with a 64% Passer Rating but has thrown for 1,721 yards, ranking third in the league.

What should be done with Eli, sit him or trade him?

Using a baseball reference - Eli should be pulled like a starting pitcher because he's killing the Giants' momentum. Eli has thrown 8 fourth-quarter interceptions, which is 5 more than any other quarterback in the league.

Eli is simply hurting his team and many want him to sit down, where they think he will be better suited to help his team.

Let's face it, Matt Schaub as well as Carson Palmer are both on the hot seat and could possibly be traded, benched, or unemployed next year...so why not Eli?

The reason why, Eli has helped produce 2 rings in New York, he is considered the leader of the team, and let's face it...who else do the Giants have?

Having a choice in the NFL is a positive; however, as the Giants go, there is no real choice but to play Eli, whose backup is Curtis Painter - Painter also was second-string to big brother Peyton - and even after backing these two quarterbacks up, do you really have the confidence that Painter would excel where Eli hasn't this year?

New York is a huge media hub, which means more than enough reporters and more than enough opinions - some wise and some just senseless.

Eli will finish out the season as the starting QB of the Giants...at least this year.

The 2014 Draft will provide good quarterback options to replace Eli, but for the time being as well as for the next 3-5 years (Eli is 32 years old), I do not see any starting quarterback changes for the New York Football Giants.

Romo Best in the League During the 4th Quarter

Brady, Peyton, Marino, Favre, and Elway are all known for comebacks - Peyton, Marino, Montana, and Brady are known as being clutch during the fourth quarter.

Those that don't follow the sport simply assume, mostly because of ill-informed fans, that Tony Romo fades in the fourth quarter -  that is simply the foolish rhetoric of less-than-educated fans.

Quick Career Stats:

  • Romo has a 68.7 QBR in the 4th
  • Tony Romo has a 104.1 fourth quarter passer rating
  • Romo has thrown for 9.1 yards per attempt during the fourth
  • Romo has completed 64% of his passes during the fourth with 4,075 yards
  • He has also thrown for 31 touchdowns during the fourth
  • He led the Cowboys to a league-high five fourth-quarter comebacks last season

An ongoing joke when a team's QB throws an interception is "He's pulling a Romo", which is simply uneducated banter by intermediate fans who do not understand the game, stats, or simply dislike Romo...and/or possibly the Cowboys

The argument for a QB is that he is only good if he has won a Super Bowl.

This argument always falls short when the likes of Marino or Moon are brought into the conversation - Dan Fouts, Boomer Esiason, Jim Kelly, as well as Fran Tarkenton are also names that can kill this argument.

Stats and facts are the only thing that can win an argument, and unfortunately, most fans are unaware of many of these stats.

New England and the Return of Gronk

Waiting for TE Rob Gronkowski to come back and rescue the Patriots offense?

Gronk is not able to aid QB Tom Brady in throwing more accurately; also, is there really anything he can do to to help the receivers actually catch the ball?

One thing Gronk will be able to do is help prevent some of the embarrassment in the red zone this season, as well as help increase New England's third down stats.

Sunday's game provided 'Old Testament-like' rain during a possible game-winning drive late in the 4th quarter, which ultimately led to an Adam Jones interception against Brady, ending a streak of 52 consecutive games with a touchdown pass.

Quick Stats:

  • According to Pro Football Focus, Brady is rated 22nd in quarterback accuracy
  • According to Pro Football Focus, the Patriots have 17 dropped passes through five games
  • Only the Rams have more dropped passes with 18
  • Denver has 16 passes dropped in five games - with 13 more touchdown passes
  • WR Danny Amendola dropped three balls against the Bengals

Brady has not been as accurate as he has been in the past.

Whether it’s a lack of trust in his receivers or poor route-running by his receivers, the Patriots' receivers don't help the cause much - rookies Aaron Dobson and Kenbrell Thompkins have each botched four passes, only slightly nudging out Amendola and Julian Edelman with three apiece.

Last season stats:

  • NFL’s top-ranked offense
  • 18 drops in seven games
  • Brandon Lloyd after seven games dropped five
  • Wes Welker, after seven games, dropped four, as did Gronkowski

The huge difference between this year and last is that the patriots averaged 31 points a game, which, if the patriots start scoring more, will outshine these dropped passes on offense.

Seattle is Getting Healthy

Considered one of the best teams in the NFL, the Seattle Seahawks begin the week needing to regroup after Sundays' 34-28 loss to the Indianapolis Colts.
Coach Pete Carroll said he expects Pro-Bowl center Max Unger to participate in practice, with a goal that he will be healthy enough to start Sunday against the visiting Tennessee Titans.
Wide receiver Percy Harvin is in Seattle for the first time since having hip surgery in early August. When back in the depth chart, Harvin will add a ton of help on offense:

  • Harvin has returned a kickoff for a touchdown in each of his four seasons in the league
  • Harvin is a weapon than can be used to confuse opposing defenses

Harvin is not able to come off the injured reserve list until Week 7, when Seattle will play against the Arizona Cardinals.

Okung cannot come off injured reserve until Nov. 17, when Seattle will play Minnesota.
The Seahawks were just 2 of 12 on third down Sunday a week after going 3 of 14 against the Houston Texans during Week 4's slim overtime win.
With rookie Michael Bowie at RT and Paul McQuistan at LT, who is playing in place of Pro Bowl LT Russell Okung, Seattle’s offensive line has lacked solidity over the past two weeks.

Jadeveon Clowney May Be Done

Jadeveon Clowney does not want to play college football anymore..
It’s apparent, he has already stated his ribs are too sore to play - Saturday against Kentucky.
Reaction: All the hype has gone to his head, he’s soft, he doesn’t love football, he’s saving himself for the NFL.
Guilty?
Clowney is a third-year junior, he was good enough to be drafted after his sophomore year; however, NFL rules prevented that from happening.
Clowney has accumulated 12 tackles and three sacks this season as teams double-team him and/or run plays to the opposite direction of him - his benefits are becoming overshadowed by his distractions.
“If he doesn’t want to play, he doesn’t have to play,”Coach Spurrier said. “Simple as that.”
The real problem is Clowney’s heart just isn’t in college football anymore.
Another incident this season is when Clowney didn't tell his coaches he couldn't play last week against Kentucky until after the team arrived at the stadium. Since then, there have been questions about whether the potential #1 pick in next year's NFL draft was shutting it down for the season.
Spurrier said Clowney has been receiving treatment twice daily since missing Saturday’s game. Clowney, who didn't practice Monday, has also been hindered by bone spurs in his right foot...as well as a stomach bug this season.

Now finishing the season or getting healthy for the NFL draft is a decision Clowney has to make.

NFL Power Rankings

Are the Raiders good?

Will the Broncos go undefeated?

What's the deal with Jacksonville?

Any given Sunday, there will be a change, a surprise, as well as what everyone expects to happen.

The 2013 NFL season is no different than any other season - games may be analyzed and studied, but let's face it, no one will ever go 100% with their picks for the season.

The bottom of the power rankings is usually easy, it's always the middle that gives analyst issues - the middle of the order, as it is every year, is all smashed together in terms of records as well as with the teams' talent levels...

NFL Nicknames

A nickname is a familiar or humorous name given to a person instead of or as well as their real name.

A nickname is also described as a descriptive name added to or replacing the actual name of a person, place, or thing.

Many of us have nicknames which either describe us or describes how people we know describe us to others.

Positively or negatively, a nickname is usually the honest truth about us.

Rather we like it or not, sometimes a nickname becomes our identity.

In sports a nickname usually lasts longer than the actual name of the player.

Here are some well-known nicknames that may stick with these players for life...

Greatest Name Changes in Sports

If someone said they were going to change their name based off a classic character from a Michael J. Fox movie, I bet your first thought might be Marty McFly, Doc Brown or Biff Tannen.

Cassius Clay - Olympic gold medalist, heavyweight champion, and arguably the best heavyweight ever - announced his conversion to Islam after beating Sonny Liston for the heavyweight title. He was known as Cassius X for a short period of time...

Matt Cassel to Start

The Vikings backup QB Matt Cassel will start for Minnesota against the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday.
Cassel will start over Christian Ponder, who suffered a rib injury in Week 3.

Ponder, the third-year starter in Minnesota, revealed he hurt his ribs during the Vikings' loss to Cleveland last Sunday.

Ponder did not participate Friday, in London, where his Vikings will play the NFL's seventh game in England.

Going into the game, the Vikings and their opponents, the Steelers, are both 0-3.

Quick Stats:
  • Cassel signed a two-year contract this off-season.
  • Cassel started 62 games during his nine-year career (New England, Kansas City, Minnesota).
  • Cassel went to the Pro Bowl in 2010 - after throwing 27 touchdowns.

Anthony Spencer May Be Done In Dallas

Dallas Cowboys DE Anthony Spencer is done for the year. Anthony Spencer may also be done in Dallas forever.

Spencer signed on a one-year franchise contract, so once this season is over, he'll be a free agent.

On a positive note, Spencer's backup George Selvie has proven that he's capable of manning the defensive end spot; however, in the grand scheme of things, Dallas still needs more depth.

Bucs Bench Josh Freeman

The Bucs have moved on from their franchise QB Josh Freeman.

On Tuesday, the Tampa Bay made the decision to bench their five-year QB and to start rookie Mike Glennon this Sunday against the Arizona Cardinals.

Tampa Bay is now looking to trade Freeman before the trade deadline, which is October 29.

With the chips in their corner, the Bucs will not look to rush this trade - as an organization, the Bucs will wait out the month to see if another team suffers an injury, which may put them right in the middle of a bidding where - right where they'd like to be.

Most likely the Bucs would receive a conditional late round pick, and if another team suffers an injury to their QB or another team in the league needs a quarterback, the Bucs will have the opportunity to capitalize on their situation.

Quick Stats:

  • Freeman was the 17th overall pick during the 2009 draft
  • Freeman is 24-35 as a starter in Tampa Bay
  • Tampa Bay has lost eight of their last nine games with Freeman
  • Over the last six games Freeman threw four touchdowns and 12 interceptions

Although Freeman was victimized by receivers dropping passes and he played better in Sunday's 23-3 loss to the Patriots, the Bucs did not feel he was going to be consistent in the future under coach Greg Schiano.

The Bucs believe QB Mike Glennon will be a better game manager - and with RB Doug Martin as the second-leading rusher in the NFL, plus their improving defense, Tampa Bay's season is definitely not over.

Manning Breaks Brady's Record

Denver's Peyton Manning now holds the record for touchdowns over the first three games in a season.

With his 13 yard pass to TE Julius Thomas, Manning surpassed Tom Brady's passing touchdown record for the first three games of a season, during a Monday Night Football game against the Oakland Raiders.

Stats
  • Manning completed his record-setting pass to Thomas with 3:46 remaining in the first half
  • Manning finished the first half 21 of 24 for 263 yards
  • WR Eric Decker caught a two-yard touchdown during the first quarter
  • WR Wes Welker caught a 12-yard TD pass early in the second
  • Denver is now 3-0 after wins over the Raiders (37-21); Giants (41-23); Ravens (27-49)
  • Denver has scored 127 points through the first three weeks of the season
  • QB Tom Brady set his record during the 2011 season, breaking a long -time record set in 1965 by QB Charley Johnson of the St. Louis Cardinals
  • The 1st player to throw 10 or more touchdown passes during the first three games after the AFL-NFL merger was Dan Marino with the Dolphins
  • Marino and Brady are still the only two players to hit this mark twice
  • Manning's three-touchdown performance now puts him on pace for 64 touchdown passes in 2013, which would be 14 more than Brady's record during the 2007 season

'Tanking for Teddy' - the trade of Trent Richardson

Louisville QB Teddy Bridgewater is expected to be the first pick in the 2014 draft - is Cleveland evoking the "Suck for Luck' campaign, which is how Indianapolis was able to sign Andrew Luck, by trading their best offensive player to Indianapolis?

Now that Cleveland traded their third overall pick from two drafts ago, Trent Richardson, who is now in Indianapolis himself, in exchange for Indianapolis' first pick during the 2014 draft - should we dub this season the 'Tanking for Teddy' season?

Expected to be the first quarterback picked during the 2014 draft, Louisville junior quarterback Teddy Bridgewater seems to be a safe bet in rebuilding a team, as well as giving a team the opportunity to win in the future.

The pick Cleveland received in the trade should be in the 20's, which also gives them an opportunity to get a a player to help aid Bridgewaters' transition into the NFL.

Redskins name change: Ultimately, it's Dan Snyder's decision

"If one person's offended, we have to listen," Goodell said, "And ultimately, it is Dan [Snyder]'s decision. But it is something that I want all of us to go out and make sure we're listening to our fans, listening to people who have a different view, and making sure that we continue to do what's right to make sure that team represents the strong tradition that it has for so many years."

49ers Anthony Dixon: 'preparing for these She-Hawks'

Two of the best teams, the Seahawks and 49ers, play Sunday night, the winner will have the advantage of not only being undefeated, but will be undefeated...and remain the #1 ranked team in the NFC Western Division.

It is also thought by many that one of these teams will be the representative for the NFC in Super Bowl XLVIII.

Suh: 'I don't change'

"I think it's just, player safety is the league's concern," Suh said. "You've got to only respect it, and that's one of the reasons I spoke to Sullivan as we walked into the halftime, and he understood where I was coming from. No hard feelings and same thing if he cut me so forth, so on, no hard feelings and go from there."

Greatest Kansas City Chief Ever

There is a long history of great Kansas City Chiefs.

Regardless if they started there or not, Joe Montana could be a consideration, Marcus Allen played in KC as well.

Christian Okoye demanded attention from opposing defenses, as did Larry Johnson, Priest Holmes, as does KC's current RB Jamaal Charles.

"Defense wins championships..." is a motto in the NFL, and however you feel about this motto, I am going to name a few dominant defensive players that have played in a Kansas City jersey, and one of them, or not, may be considered the "Greatest Chief ever"

Willie Lanier - A gifted linebacker from the 60's may come to mind; Bobby Bell (LB), another one of Kansas City's greatest players may come to mind; as well as Neil Smith, who may be the most dominate DE ever to play in Kansas City may also come up during any NFL conversation.

However, the greatest player in Chiefs' history could be an unfortunately short-lived linebacker from Alabama.

Drafted fourth overall during the 1989 NFL Draft, Derrick Thomas played 11 seasons with the Chiefs, after earning Defensive Rookie of the Year honors.

Earning Pro Bowl honors for his rookie season, Thomas later went on to be named to the Pro Bowl 9-times all together.

During his 10 year career, Thomas recorded 126.5 sack, ranking him 12th all-time in NFL history - more importantly, he still holds the record for QB sacks in one game (7, during the 1990 season).

Thomas also added to his resume, the fact that he is included as one of only 25 NFL players to achieve 100 or more sacks - Today, he is still ranked fifth all-time in Chiefs' history with 649 career tackles.

NFL Coaches On ‘Hot Seat’ In 2013

Dennis Allen is the seventh coach for the Raiders Jon Gruden left in 2001. We could see the eighth in 2014 if Allen and Oakland don't make progress this season. It'll be an uphill battle this season, considering the Raiders features 14 new starters.

Calculating a QB's Passer Rating

  1. Divide QB's completed passes by attempts.
  2. Subtract 0.3.
  3. Divide by 0.2 and recorrd the total (The sum cannot be greater than 2.375 or less than zero).
  4. Divide passing yards by attempts.
  5. Subtract 3.
  6. Divide by 4 and record total (The sum cannot be greater than 2.375 or less than zero).
  7. Divide touchdown passes by attempts.

Jets QB

Geno Smith's long green room wait ended today (pick 39) .

Smith's toughness and talent will be tested now after being drafted by the Jets. During the draft, he showed confidence - even during his wait

"We're going to the playoffs next year," Smith said immediately after being drafted.

The Jets still have major concerns at guard, receivers, and tight end. Now with 6 quarterbacks on the roster (Mark Sanchez , David Garrard , and Tim Tebow) will there be more competition? Or simply a change?

Now coach Rex Ryan is in a put up or shut up year and has to balance trying to win with developing new talent.

Smith may be better off sitting and learning on the bench: however he's likely to compete for a starting job with the temptation to play him once the Jets start losing.

If Ryan doesn't win, Smith will likely have to learn another offensive system with a new coach in 2014.

"I just want to come in and compete, I'm going to accept my role on the team whatever it is," Smith told reporters. "I'm going to come in and work ... do my best for my teammates in order to win a Super Bowl.

Just a new installment in the drama of the Jets.

Matt Flynn will be a Raider

The Seattle Seahawks traded backup quarterback Matt Flynn to the Oakland Raiders on Monday in exchange for two draft picks - Seahawks receive a fifth-round draft pick in 2014 and a conditional 2015 selection.

The Raiders are still working to trade Carson Palmer to the Cardinals for a late-round draft selection; in order to make the trade happen, Palmer is expected to restructure his contract in order to make the trade happen.

Flynn was scheduled to make less than half of what Palmer was to make in 2013. Flynn only has two career starts , both with the Packers. With the Raiders, Flynn will face competition from third-year-pro Terrelle Pryor.

Flynn may offer the Raiders similar production as Palmer for far less pay; however, the Raiders should not quit searching for their long-term quarterback.

New Pass Rusher in Atlanta

Osi Umenyiora agreed to a 2 year contract with the Atlanta Falcons on Wednesday, as NFL.com's Steve Wyche reported.

NFL.com's Ian Rapoport reported the two-year is worth $8.5 million with a maximum value of $12.2 million. The contract also includes $5 million in the first year, according to Rapoport.

The Falcons were in need of a pass rusher to replace ex-Falcon John Abraham (still a free agent).
"There was nothing better than to be able to win (in New York)," Umenyiora said, referring to his 2 Super Bowl wins with the Giants . "The only thing I can think of that would be better than being able to win in New York would be to be able to win here in Atlanta. We'll see how that plays out. Hopefully, it works out in a positive direction."

Umenyiora spent his first nine seasons with the Giants , with 75 sacks; however, last year, he was a part-time player finishing with six sacks, 43 tackles and two forced fumbles. Umenyiora will help the Falcons ' pass rush; however, the Falcons will probably seek more help in the draft.

NY Jets' QB

Earlier this month, New York Jets offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg told reporters, Mark Sanchez had "just a little bit of a leg up" in the current quarterback competition; however, now, Jets coach Rex Ryan is no longer willing to match the endorsement for Sanchez.

According to Ryan, there isn't a clear-cut favorite. According to the New York Daily News. "I just think it's going to be competition from day one and obviously Sanchez will take the first snap and things but that's all you can say.", explained Ryan

"I do know this - The play at quarterback has to get a lot better," Ryan said. "There's no doubt. Whether it's Mark or somebody else, we know we have to improve in that area without a doubt. I guess we can file that in the 'no kidding' category."

Romo's Future

On Tuesday, owner/general manager of the Dallas Cowboys, Jerry Jones disclosed that a new contract for QB Tony Romo would happen in the near future.

Romo, entering the final year of his contract, is scheduled to earn a base salary of $11.5 million in 2013. The Cowboys will attempt to lower his cap amount, which is currently the highest for the Cowboys, $16.8 million.

Cap room is needed in order to sign available free agents as well as to create money in order to sign players in this year's NFL draft.

Romo, 32, threw for 4,903 yards during the 2012-13 season, adding 28 touchdown passes to his career stats; however, Romo, tied with the New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees, led the league with 19 interceptions - which is the Romo has thrown since the 2007 season.

Rams Improvement?

The St. Louis Rams, 2-1-1 against the 2012 NFC West heavyweights (49ers and Seahawks), have helped to stabilize their offensive line, after using 16 different starters since 2010.

OT Jake Long now allows the Rams someone with the credentials to match up against solid pass rushers in the same division such as Aldon & Justin Smith (no relation), the newly-signed Cliff Avril (Seattle), Bruce Irvin, Calais Campbell as well as other pass-rushers the NFC West opponents may send looking for Sam Bradford.

The Rams, filling a major need heading into the draft, now free up options in this year's draft - they are now able to look for value in the draft as opposed to being crutched by searching for need.

Desperation does not aid any team during the draft, desperation leads to picks which normally do not pan-out long term – drafting value players will aid the Rams in creating a foundation for the future.

On the flip side,
Long, the first overall pick during the 2008 draft, does come with some injury concerns – Long's biceps and triceps injuries forced him to miss six games over the past two seasons – finishing both seasons on IR.

An argument can be made that the Rams must use their draft picks in order to
upgrade their backfield and wide receiver crew, after losing Danny Amendola and Steven Jackson; however, the Rams, have helped Bradford (QB), in the passing game, by adding Jared Cook (TE), who is already familiar with Jeff Fisher, after playing for him in Tennessee.

NY's New TE

Brandon Myers has agreed to sign with the New York Giants.

Myers, 27, signs with the Giants after an explosive season, leading the Oakland Raiders in receiving (79 catches for 806 yards as well as four touchdowns). Myers should fill the void left by Martellus Bennett, who left for the Chicago Bears after his own breakout campaign during the 2012/2013 season.

Since free agency began, the Giants have had interest in Myers. After getting a better idea of the market, the Giants invited Myers to their facilities on Saturday.

Some say Carson Palmer had much to do with Myers' production last season; however, Myers also proved that he is a dependable pass-catching tight end.

Bennett may be a more athletic/dynamic talent than Myers; however, Myers should do well in his new role as a Giant.

Cowboys' Free Agency

Heading into the weekend, the Dallas Cowboys have lost three free agents and have yet to sign one.

Getting left behind in the NFC East, even after making moves in order to get $175,000 under the $123 million NFL cap limit, the Redskins, Giants, as well as Eagles have all made advances during this free agency.

As of now, The Cowboys' upgrades for next year will have to come from the injured players who missed a large portion of the 2012/2013 season.

Players such as Bruce Carter, Sean Lee, as well as Jay Ratliff, will have to make an impact in next year's season, in which The Cowboys will change to a 4-3 defense.

The draft is next month, and there still may be changes in Dallas which may include more cuts or extensions on contracts, in order to get the Cowboys further under the cap limit and create money, which will help The Cowboys sign more talent for the 2013/2014 season.
